Tortillas…Good or Bad?

Someone had recently asked which tortillas would be recommended for the Fat-Burning Machine diet.  When choosing a tortilla look for quality of ingredients first, then look for size.  Corn is typically a better choice because of the ingredients and size.

If you decide to use flour tortillas, take a look at the ingredients first. Typical flour tortillas have loads of fillers, unrecognizable ingredients, and low quality highly refined oils.  Here’s an example ingredient list:

Mission Flour Tortillas:  Enriched Bleached Wheat Flour (Wheat Flour, Niacin, Reduced Iron, Thiamine Mononitrate, Riboflavin, Folic Acid), Water, Vegetable Shortening (Interesterified Soybean Oil, Hydrogenated Soybean Oil and/or Palm Oil), contains 2% or less of: Salt, Sugar, Leavening (Sodium Bicarbonate, Sodium Aluminum Sulfate, Corn Starch, Monocalcium Phosphate and/or Sodium Acid Pyrophosphate, Calcium Sulfate), Distilled Monoglycerides, Enzymes, Wheat Starch, Calcium Carbonate, Antioxidants (Tocopherols, Ascorbic Acid, Citric Acid), Cellulose Gum, Guar Gum, Dough Conditioners (Fumaric Acid, Sodium Metabisulfite and/or Mono- and Diglycerides), Calcium Propionate and Sorbic Acid (to preserve freshness).

Know that there are flour tortillas that have more recognizable ingredients and no hydrogenated oils (aka trans fats.) Here is the ingredient list for one such tortilla, a better choice:

Stacy’s Organic Whole Wheat Flour Tortillas:  Whole wheat and unbleached white flours, water, organic sunflower oil, baking powder, salt, citric acid, organic malted barley flour.

If you decide to skip the flour and go with corn, these tortillas have less calories, carbohydrates, and fat.  Save your fat consumption for good quality fat like avocados! Corn tortillas are typically made with fewer unrecognizable ingredients.  Look for corn tortillas that have the basic ingredients of corn, water and not much else. Here are some of my favorites:

365 Corn Tortillas: Organic whole corn, water, trace of lime.
Food for Life Sprouted Corn Tortillas: Organic Sprouted Corn, Filtered Water, Sea Salt, Lime.
Mi Rancho: Water, Organic Whole White Corn, Organic Yellow Corn Masa Flour, Trace Of Lime, Organic Guar Gum.

The best choice would be to swap out the tortilla for a lettuce wrap or place the contents on a bed of fresh greens.  It’s the perfect opportunity to get your serving of leafy greens and there’s no ingredient list that makes your head spin.
